“Shelby is the best face painter I know. She is friendly, professional, and great with kids. She is always open to suggestions and new ideas. The time she spends researching — and the care she takes creating — her more complex designs is absolutely remarkable.
“I am so glad that she face painted for the Fall for the Fells family festival. She did an excellent job and I highly recommend her.”
-Ann Frenning Kossuth, Director of Youth Programs at Friends of the Middlesex Fells
Background: I enjoy face painting at community events, parties, and other gatherings. It is wonderful to see the joy that children and adults get from having beautiful designs on their own faces. I am also very interested in painting for individuals who are looking for custom designs for performances, special occasions (like masquerade balls or costume parties), or portrait photography sessions.
My experience includes parties and events for Studio on the Common, Borealis Community Yoga, Friends of the Fells, the Fessenden School, the East Boston Early Education Center, All You Need is Ice Cream, the Medford Family Network, New England Friends of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indian Americans of Lexington, Faith Christian Church, Mount Hope Christian Church, Jewish Vocational Service, Ready Set Kids! and Boston-area families.
As an artist, I have taken classes at MassArt, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Art Institute of Boston, Maryland Institute College of Art, the Center for Cartoon Studies, and the Illustration Academy. As a face painter, I have taken courses from renowned face painters at the Kapital Kidvention conference and the East Coast Face Paint Convention. In addition, I am certified in adult and pediatric first aid and CPR/AED.
Designs: For events, I bring photographs showing different possible designs, including several designs related to the theme of your party. I also like to get input from the person being painted, whether they just want to change the design to match their favorite colors or they would like me to paint something else entirely. Depending on the event, I can offer simple designs for children who are eager to spend just a few minutes sitting still or more complex designs for older children and adults.
Event Logistics: I am based in Winchester, Massachusetts and am available to work in the greater Boston area. My rate for weekend events is $70/hr with a two-hour minimum. There is no travel fee for Boston and all other towns inside the 95/128 beltway, and no travel fee for towns that are outside the beltway but within 30 minutes drive of Winchester (including Concord, Burlington, Lowell, Danvers, etc.) Sliding-scale, nonprofit, and weekday discounts are available.
If you are interested in booking face painting for an event, party, or other project, or you simply have questions, please e-mail me at ShelbyMeyerhoff@gmail.com or call 617-875-5268.
Materials and Safety: Safety is very important to me. All of the paints that I use are made from FDA-approved ingredients, and I select these paints from high-quality brands including Ruby Red, TAG, Wolfe FX, and Mehron. These paints dry quickly and once dry they stay on the face or other exposed skin for a couple hours or more, but they can also be easily washed away with soap and water or wiped away with makeup removers like Neutrogena. I use an alcohol-based spray to sterilize brushes before painting each person.
The glitter that I use is cosmetic-grade and biodegradable.
I follow the International Face Painting Association guidelines not to paint children under two years old and to paint only small designs on children ages 2-3 (which works out well because most children that age prefer small designs and not having to sit still for too long!)
Shelby Meyerhoff Creative, LLC is registered in Massachusetts and is fully insured.
Classes: I also offer Face Painting 101 lessons for children and families. Please e-mail or call me for more information on arranging an individual or small-group class.
